Ian Mulligan

Ian Patrick Mulligan, Helen’s much loved brother, uncle to Alice and Henry and close family member, died suddenly as the result of a heart attack on 25 July 2007, aged 52. He is deeply mourned by his wife Jane, mother Edna, and all his family, colleagues and many friends. Ian died while on a visit to Cuba.

Ian was Consultant Cardiologist at Milton Keynes General Hospital, where he’d been instrumental in setting up a cardiac lab for new treatment procedures. Ian’s patients will miss his gentle bedside manner, as well as the confidence and authority he brought to diagnosis and treatment.

He was in the midst of planning further initiatives at the hospital, for example a link-up to provide cardiology services in conjunction with Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire. Always at the forefront of new developments in his specialty, Ian continued to pursue research alongside his clinical practice and published a number of papers in collaboration with colleagues at the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at Oxford University.

Ian had wide interests outside medicine – he loved travel and outdoor activities. He had developed a deep regard for the country and culture of Cuba, where he travelled several times in recent years: he was perfecting his Spanish, collecting Cuban music and studying salsa. He admired the dedication and achievements of medical professionals in the country, and was planning to spend some time working alongside them.

Death is but crossing the world, as friends do the seas; they live in one another still...

This is the comfort of friends, that they may be said to die, yet their friendship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal.

Giving Ian a Good Send-Off

Toast to Ian at Jane's reception, Chalfont Road, Oxford

Thanks to all who came or sent messages of support to our gatherings on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th August to say goodbye to Ian.

Ian was cremated at a private ceremony in Oxford on Thursday 16th.  The Memorial and Celebration of the Life of Ian Mulligan was held on Friday 17 August, in the chapel of Corpus Christi College.

Ian was an enthusiastic salsador, so salsa dancing at his wake was the obvious way to send him off...
